Went through Lackland in 1979. After a few days we were begging for more exercise. Our MTI* was happy to hear that but told us that due to new training rules we were getting the max PT allowable. The standards were lowered so more women would pass. It wasn’t part of the mind game. Later the solution that was instructors weren’t allowed to tell the trainees about the lowered standards anymore.
MTI = Military Training Instructor for the USAF. Drill Instructor ( DI ) in other services.
Yeah, it started going to hell some time ago.
We did PT for the FULL 2 hours every week-day morning in July and August. The PT instructor was a black guy who didn’t much like white kids, which most of our flight was.
About an hour in, we’d watch the heat flag go up. The instructor would chuckle and keep us going for the second hour.
2 guys in our squadron died of heat stroke. We only heard of those two. It was tough but my brother and I survived and were never in better shape in our lives.
And our guys were still called TIs in ‘62. We were housed in the old WWII wooden barracks which I guess were finally replaced my brick and mortar dormitories — complete with AIR CONDITIONING! We had a couple 36” floor fans and kept the windows open!
