Congressman: We need a National Guard for cybersecurity

There are few people with computer science backgrounds who work in the federal government. Long hours coupled with smaller salaries make it hard to recruit techies to Washington, according to Representative Ruben Gallego.

But one way to get more tech people to serve their country is to set up a cybersecurity reservist system, like a National Guard for digital security, said Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona.

"We have to accept that, look, this person is not going to man a machine gun, why would we put them through bootcamp, we're never going to send them to the front line," Gallego told CNNTech. "But we could definitely use their knowledge in service to our country."

Gallego, a Marine Corps veteran, spoke at the SXSW Interactive festival on Saturday, joined by fellow congressman Will Hurd. They talked about the importance of bridging the gaps between technology and government.

Gallego and Hurd are two of the youngest members in the House of Representatives, and Gallego joked that they're often asked for IT support and how to use Snapchat....

We already have cyber security units at the FBI, CIA, DOD, and HSA. They are the problem. Foxes on steroids guarding the hen house. Government always serves itself first, our allies second, cash flush lobbyists third, and Joe the Plumber comes in last.

I really don’t want effective government snoops, but if they are going to do it anyway they might as well do it from low cost areas like Des Moines, Omaha, Columbus (OH) etc.

Metro DC is absurdly expensive on government salaries—and the “locality adjustment” is somebody’s idea of a sick joke.

Btw, there is a significant city tax for working in DC—I kid you not—adds insult to injury.
