The nature of the event has changed. Once it was a gathering of more or less collegial participants who threw a few friendly barbs back and forth. It has become the media equivalent of a show trial, where the ones with the real power may summon the President, abuse him without moderation, flaunt their gaudy feathers on camera, and depart having shown the country where the real power lies. It’s a mug’s game, and Trump refused to play it, and so long as the event is corrupted by inveterate hostility I’d hope he would continue to do so.
