Summer lunch program moves to middle school

Hutchinson's free summer lunch program for youth age 18 or younger is moving this summer. The new site will be the Hutchinson Middle School cafeteria, 1365 South Grade Road S.W.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday from May 30 through Aug. 11. Special activities will take place on Wednesday, June 28, and Monday, July 24.

During past years, the free summer lunch program was served at VFW and Rotary Parks in Hutchinson.

According to Lesli Mueller, director of child nutrition for Hutchinson, Litchfield and Dassel-Cokato, "... with the VFW Park site under construction and not available for use ... we thought it would be a good opportunity to serve the program out of a different site this summer and see if we can reach more kids in need."

Between the two parks, a total of 3,464 meals were served in 2014. This number jumped up in 2015 to a total of 3,963 meals served, and then dropped in 2016 to a total of 3,250 meals served.

While children's lunches are free, adult lunches will cost $3.90 per meal. No lunch service will be available July 3 through 7.

Meals are prepared and provided by Hutchinson Public Schools.

In addition to the Hutchinson Middle School, the Glencoe-Silver Lake Schools and Litchfield will also provide free meals to anyone age 18 or younger at two sites: •Helen Baker Elementary School, 405 E. 16th St., Glencoe, serves lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m. June 12 through July 24, except July 4. •Glencoe-Silver Lake Elementary School, 229 Lake Ave., Silver Lake, serves breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 12 through July 27, except July 4. •Litchfield Senior High School, 901 N. Gilman Ave., serves lunch from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. June 12 through Aug. 18, except the week of July 3-7. To volunteer, call Heather at 320-693-7911.

We have free summer lunch in our local park. The garbage cans overflow with the uneaten food but the squirrels love it!

I had to go to the bottom of the article to see that this is Hutchinson MN. Is Hutchinson a low income area?

I noticed that they were all clean white kids in the photo.

Every locality has such programs. Even Silicon Valley, Beverley Hills, Palm Beach, SOHO, NOVA and Dubya’s neighborhood.

From Wikipedia:. The racial makeup of the city was 95.4% White, 0.9% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.8% of the population.

There were 5,950 households of which 31.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them.

30% of households is a high number. Portland Maine it is less than 10%.

I also noticed that the population estimate for 2015 is down 1.9% from 2010 after decades of steady growth.

Free? Maybe to the low lifes but not to the taxpayers.

Here, there are vans that take lunches around to various places around town so it’s within walking distance and several locations outside the city. The age is from 0-21. One lunch advertised is a hot meatball sub with veggie sticks and dip, drink and desert. Better than what I’m having today.
