Get closer than 12 feet and they’re toast. (CA highway patrol stats stated in their review of officer gun fights the average distance was 12 feet).

Problem is, you have to get closer than 12 feet to get the cuffs on. Which is why our shooting course included a strong-hand draw and muzzle contact shot with the left hand on the face of a silhouette target. That might not have been the best place for the use of the left hand, but it minimized shooting your own hand.

It was one of the very few instances in which we didn't use the weapon's sights and *shot from the hip.* [Speed rock]

The shooting study was armed conflict not trying to cuff a suspect.
