The police asked for his ID. Like most men he kept it in his pocket. What was he suppose to do?

In a traffic stop, the first thing the cop does is look up your car reg. on his computer. If you are a CCW holder, it will show on his computer.

“Oh by the way, I was a cop 1973-1978.”

I agree with Tommy this man should have NEVER been a cop. Do you agree? If so tell me how he got past all the checks most police academy’s have in place to find people who are not qualified for the job?

In my CCW class the subject came up. His suggestion is to not divulge unless asked. However if asked be totally honest. That’s what the CCW license is for, to show you are in compliance with the law.

interesting, in my many legal aspects of conceal carry classes, all of my instructors say keep your hands on the wheel open palmed and inform the officer if you are carrying whether you have to by law or not. different for any guns locked away in the trunk.

I was taught at the Concealed Carry Class to do the following...
1-Stay in the car & put your hands on top of the steering wheel and visible.
2-Turn on the dome light (if at night)
3-When the officer approaches the very first thing you say is.. “Hello Officer, I have a Concealed Carry Permit and I am (or am not carrying a weapon at the present time”
4-Follow all instructions the Officer gives you

And keep in mind that cops are not perfect.

“The police asked for his ID. Like most men he kept it in his pocket. What was he suppose to do?”

The details are a bit sketchy (from what I’ve seen), but before he fired, the officer is reported to have told Castile to “stop moving”.

For his part, Castile didn’t help his situation by “carrying while stoned” - which appeared to inhibit his ability to focus & follow orders.

Unfortunately, it appears that mistakes were made all around - and Castile paid for it. Bottom line: the jury (with 2 blacks) gave the officer the benefit of the doubt.

Depends on the state. Missouri by law in fact prohibits any information release regarding CCP by the issuing sheriff unless as part of a formal investigation/ court order.

MO used to collect & include CCP data in the MO Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES) via department of revenue ( = DMV) but after the MO HP and the DOR gave the feds the lists of CCPs in breach of state law ( purportedly for SS fraud/mentally ill folks with a CCP and therefore likely a firearm), the state no longer actually knows who has a CCP-only the SD where you live- decentralized for privacy.

AFA how to act during a stop- be calm, keep your hands on the wheel , turn on a dome light before you stop, roll the window partly down, if you are carrying either tell the officer in neutral voice (I have a CCP and I am/am not carrying, it is on my left hip in a retention holster). Although in MO you are required to inform unless asked....

Do exactly as the LEO tells you.

“...this attitude that the public must immediately comply with ANY order from police or risk death is wrong...”

ANY (ANY?!) order? Sigh... does it really need to be said on this board, that we’re talking about REASONABLE orders? And since you brought it up, can you give an example - that you’ve heard of, or experienced - where the civilian should NOT have complied?

“Too many itchy trigger fingers”
All the more reason to do what you’re told.

wow. I guess for the sake of black folk we need to hire psychics instead of cops? Memo to black folk: when you’re carrying a gun and the nice officer tells you to put your hands in plain sight, don’t go reaching for things the nice officer can’t see from outside the car.

What do suggest when the cop then demands to see the ID that is in your back pocket?

“What do suggest when the cop then demands to see the ID that is in your back pocket?”

The sequence is unclear to me. Yes, it has been reported that the cop asked for ID, but was this request before or after, Castile told him he had a gun?

If Castile responded to the request for ID with “I have a gun” - and then starts reaching - that would put me in a defensive posture, and I tell the guy to stop moving.

If the above is true - what do YOU do if Castile doesn’t stop reaching?

Do you know the sequence of events?

You are correct, we have not seen the evidence the jurors did. But there was enough evidence for the DA to charge Yanez, there was enough evidence for the department to fire Yanez and the other policeman pesent did not see the need to start shooting.

True; it would be interesting to understand why the decided the way they did.

I agree there was enough evidence to charge him, but there also was outrage in the community driving the decision to charge him.

But no, if an officer tells you to do something, that direction is not absolute, or to be followed regardless of future orders.

In this case, the officer asked the man for his license and registration. The man got his registration and handed it to the officer. While the officer was looking at the registration, the man said “I have a gun”. The officer then said “don’t reach for it, then”.

Yes, a person COULD interpret that as “keep doing what you are doing, but don’t reach for the gun”. And the guy apparently said “I’m not”. But he was reaching into a pocket, and his gun was in a pocket. And surprisingly, people who are reaching for a gun to shoot a cop will often say “I’m not reaching for my gun”. It’s what criminals do.

Clearly, the right thing to do in that case is to stop whatever you are doing, and put your hands out. If the officer wanted your license, he isn’t going to SHOOT you because you haven’t grabbed it in the last 10 seconds. He will say “You didn’t give me your license yet”.

The right time to say you have a gun is when the officer first speaks to you. “Give me your license and registration”, answered by “Before I take my hands off the wheel, I am telling you I am a CCW permit holder and have a gun in the car. What would you like me to do”.

I feel like Castille would be alive if, instead of his girlfriend yelling at the cop “he isn’t reaching for his gun”, she had yelled at her boyfriend “stop moving you idiot, he’s pointing a gun at you”.

Agreed. And as I’ve noted earlier, Castile didn’t help himself by “carrying while stoned”.

And speaking of the GF - have you ever see anything so cold-hearted as her calmly stating in her live-stream that the “cop has killed her boyfriend” - while he is laying there beside her - moaning and obviously still alive? Very odd.

Last time I was stopped I kept my hands on the steering wheel he asked if I was caring I said no I’m just taking this child referring to my son to his Eagle Scout review. I was obviously quite irritated with my son at that point as we are 15 minutes late he then. Have a good time

I think you can’t judge someone’s emotions by how they react to tragedy. We all have coping mechanisms, and there is no “right” or “wrong” way to process that someone you love is dying. Her’s certainly didn’t seem usual, but I’m not going to doubt she had emotions.
