I don't know much about guns, and wondered where 'assault' came from:

The AR in “AR-15” rifle stands for ArmaLite rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s. “AR” does NOT stand for “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle.”

M16 does not stand for assault rifle...and yet it is one. M60 does not stand for light machine gun..and yet it is one. The ar15 is an assault rifle because its the kimd of weapon it is, not because ar stands for anything.
