Good on you; you have the right outlook. Life just doesn’t run in a straight line all the time. People have to dig in and work through the issues. The worst thing is to give up

There was a good book called “Nickel and Dimed” around 15 years ago that explained how low wage jobs were paying far less than they had a generation before, creating a new class of employed people who were extremely poor in America. Jobs that would have allowed a person to rent a small apartment and be self sufficient in the 70’s or 80’s were by 2000 paying so little that the people with those jobs were effectively homeless even if they worked more than 40 hours a week.

Older conservatives foolishly mocked the author and ignored the factual information in the book. Young conservatives like me who were still in school and working low wage jobs could see that these jobs paid far less in terms of purchasing power than similar jobs our parents had. It’s universal experience of my generation that our boomer parents assumed our first jobs paid far more than they did. They would be surprised that we couldn’t pay even half our tuition with a full time job. Minimum wage in the 1960’s and 70’s was around 15-25 dollars an hour in today’s money depending on which economist’s calculations you uses. Now many people in that generation have lost their middle class jobs and are living hand to mouth on wages that are half of what they made in their first jobs.

The election of Obama, the passing of Obamacare and the rise of Trump and Sanders are directly related to the decline in wages for low paid workers since the end of the Cold War. Populism is going to keep growing until this reverses. Trump is an incredibly lucky break for conservatives. If Trump fails, we will likely have a hardline Bernie Sanders style socialist in the White House no later than 2024.

Swamp coolers are making a high tech comeback for use in arid climates, they do work, just not anywhere humid. They just make humid air more humid, it has to be arid to evaporate; it works due to evaporative cooling. Misters spraying mist on outdoor bars and dining areas in AZ are another example. Here, you’d just be wetter and hotter, lol.

Good for you! Great story. I’m impressed that you retooled yourself and took away the right lessons from that awful experience. The key to long term success is keeping those new skills sharp with constant additional education.

The bank would have given you a better rate than that.

What bank is going to approve a major loan to someone who is unemployed and how are you going to pay it back if you have no job? You already have major expenses to pay.......

Yeah, that would have been it. Ours was a ‘ram-air’ model.

That thing I just posted some Gifs of appears to be a simple, very weak exhaust fan. Yet in their shameless commercial it’s significantly cooling the car’s interior off. I doubt the piece of junk would make any difference at all. I wonder how many they sold through these slime ball commercials.

Automobile air conditioning

History

A company in New York City in the United States first offered installation of air conditioning for cars in 1933. Most of their customers operated limousines and luxury cars.[1]

In 1939, Packard became the first automobile manufacturer to offer an air conditioning unit in its cars.[2] These were manufactured by Bishop and Babcock Co, of Cleveland, Ohio.

The “Bishop and Babcock Weather Conditioner” also incorporated a heater. Cars ordered with the new “Weather Conditioner” were shipped from Packard’s East Grand Boulevard facility to the B&B factory where the conversion was performed. Once complete, the car was shipped to a local dealer where the customer would take delivery.

Packard fully warranted and supported this conversion, and marketed it well. However, it was not commercially successful for a number of reasons:

The main evaporator and blower system took up half of the trunk space (though this became less of a problem as trunks became larger in the post-war period).
It was superseded by more efficient systems in the post-war years.

It had no temperature thermostat or shut-off mechanism other than switching the blower off. (Cold air would still sometimes enter the car with any movement as the drive belt was continuously connected to the compressor—later systems would use electrically operated clutches to remedy this problem.)

The several feet of plumbing going back and forth between the engine compartment and trunk proved unreliable in service.

The price, at US $274 ($4,692.12 in 2014 US dollars), was unaffordable to most people in post-depression/pre-war America.

The option was discontinued after 1941.[3]

Many houses that are for rent today do not have a group of long-term roommates, but renters who come and go, somewhat akin to a boarding house with only the “room” but no “board.” Unfortunately, as you say, it can be a bad situation for people. Our daughter is renting a room in a house. A new tenant moved in this week (only the two of them) and, when our daughter came home from work, the house was thick with dope smoke. The landlord had said OK to it without telling our daughter. So she is now out looking for a new place.

Yeah, what a joke.

I had a house in Phoenix with both a swamp cooler and a refrigerated unit on the roof. I could select between the two at the thermostat.

One week I went to a laundromat, and noticed that clothes drying was all free. Then it occurred to me why. The outdoor heat and low humidity made using a home clothes line a no-brainer. So the laundromats loaded all the price into the washing machines. They had their money, so you could do what you wanted to get your clothes dry. Damned clever.

Wow so mean when I couldn’t get hired by anyone because they considered me too old and too expensive it was balanced out by some A-hole getting hired instead? That sucks in anyone’s book.

Craigslist is a great place to look for apartments and rooms. You have many options for modifying your search results, including price range, images provided of the place, no broker fees, etc.

A friend of mine’s family car was a 1952 Chrysler. It had a semi-automatic transmission. It was an automatic transmission where you still had a clutch! As I recall, you used the clutch to shift from LO to DRIVE, or something like that, and then it was automatic. Very weird.

Human nature hasn't changed much in thousands of years. It's a common theme of ancient fables that many of us learned as children. Others not so well...
