“Henry John Deutschendorf Junior; that’s my name too!”
Nope; never heard of him.
I do remember that Burns played his role “without makeup”.
Saw him at Notre Dame.
I remember he became an activist for environmental/other causes(wasn't he one of those activists/celeb's who got upset when he got snubbed on the "we are the world" song/video?...should have considered himself fortunate).
Still, good musician, writer, not that bad of an actor(Oh God)...though probably(among his peers)considered(like the Carpenters)too "square" for the times(that were'a chang'n...for the worse).
As an aviation enthusiast myself, I appreciated that he(like Kurt Russell)promoted general aviation...that he died doing one of the things that took him away from the dregs of celebrity, and that brought him peace(even if, perhaps prematurely...eternal).
One of those celeb's that I'll always remember where I was, what I was doing when I heard the news of his passing...sad day.
Yeah, he had his personal issues like a lot of celeb's, and(like a lot of celebs)I probably would have hated a lot of his politics...but his talents brought joy to many around the world.
His song "Looking for Space"(featured in a Magnum PI episode)is a song my brother and I will always associate as a remembrance piece associated with the passing of our dad.
Blue Skies and Tailwinds...may he RIP.
Matthew. Is one of the best songs he ever did.
He is pretty well known. I am in my late 50s but I know who Glenn Miller was. There is no reason why a 20 something wouldn’t know Denver.
Actually I find my kids know a much more diverse world of music than I ever did at their age.
His music kinda sucked but people at the airport FBO in Denver who knew him said you’d never meet a nicer guy.
Colorado Rocky Mountain hiiiiigh
And Country Roads...
Great songs. American classics. A bunch of country artists just did a medley with Country Roads and a Dolly Parton song, cant remember. Its very well done.
I wish the gullible cnn believers had any love for the natural countryside in this great land.
He did make quite a splash...
In June 1996 I golfed in a group right behind him at Spyglass Hill (https://www.pebblebeach.com/golf/spyglass-hill-golf-course/) on the Monterey Peninsula. Myself and 3 buddies drove down from San Francisco to play at Spyglass. When we arrived inside the clubhouse Denver was meandering around and we were signing in. Then over the PA came the announcement for the Denver party to tee off. One of my buddies goes up to him and says, “Denver, like John Denver”. And he smiled and said yes.” He was easily recognizable.
If you have ever played golf at Spyglass or Pebble Beach you know how crazy it is with the overcapacity due to the tourists. The pace of play can be sooo long.
So they were always waiting to play and we arrived to the next tee box on almost every hole. We had the opportunity to constantly chat with him and his much younger girlfriend, an Aussie or Brit I can’t seem to recall which. But she was a very good golfer, having played collegiately at the University of Texas. And we learned that he had just arrived back from a concert tour in Japan and South Korea where he was still very popular.
The last 3 holes we all played together as one big group since it was getting dark. I think I have a group photo somewhere. In any event he was a down to earth kind of guy just enjoying himself and life.
John Denver: ‘My dark night of the soul’

After he crashed onto the ocean he had a sky burial. The seagulls were there picking up pieces of him.
Nowadays they probably confuse him with David Hasselhoff.
I liked Denver and his music. I bought a DVD of his greatest hits after he passed.
I never thought of him as a liberal.
I always thought of him bringing music to my ears that I still cherish today.
As long as the lyrics and music are not contaminated with liberal garbage, I’ll take the music from anybody. But, John Denver was someone that I could handle his music anytime.
Heck, I had his music in my car all the time, and I subjected anybody else that traveled in my car to the same music. Wish he was still with us, but, his music still haunts me.
He was born in the summer of his 27th year
Coming home to a place he’d never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door
When he first came to the mountains his life was far away
On the road and hanging by a song
But the string’s already broken and he doesn’t really care
It keeps changing fast and it don’t last for long
Pothead, drunk driver, and pilot who died illegally flying an airplane. Yeah, I remember the idiot and danger to society.
A cousin of mine’s father was a test pilot and instructor in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s and then went into the astronaut program at Canaveral. Denver was also an Air Force brat and a classmate of my cousin’s. He and Henry Deutchendorf smoked a lot of dope back in their school days.
Not if I can help it. Denver really perfected inoffensive soft country, but inoffensive music doesn’t stick in the brain well. Which makes him forgettable.
