If anyone remembers Thundarr the Barbarian this was achieved just by a planetoid passing closely to the moon.

Ok, I remember. As soon as I started reading this, I thought of a tv show or movie that had a split moon

Who could forget Thundarr the Barbarian?

They has an episode with acid rain, which ate away and destroyed everything it touched.

A future apocalyptic wasteland. Dystopia for kids!

The other dystopia for kids TV show was Ark 2. Now that show was just plain nutty. Almost a Damnation Alley for young ones.
