Lee was wonderful, but Grant was America’s greatest General. And Sherman should be considered. And a very strong case can be made for General Custer. They’ve made him into a laughing stock today but the truth of it is he probably saved the union during the Civil War.

“...but Grant was America’s greatest General.

What cemented Grant’s greatness was his overall strategy during the Overland Campaign. He engaged what was the South’s greatest asset, the ANV, and battered it ‘til it was pinned up against the James River. His continual outflanking of Lee was the key. Grant’s army was in turn battered by the ANV - but he was able to replace those losses. Lee couldn’t.

Grant was a butcher of his own men.

Lot easier to win when you have four times the manpower and resources to call upon.

In an even fight, they would have lost the whole thing.

I agree with your assessment of Grant. His campaign to take Vicksburg was brilliant. He not only succeeded in crossing the Mississippi with his entire army but he kept his opponent totally baffled on where he was.

I kind of agree with what your saying except for Custer!
You’re going to have to do a lot of convincing of me on that one! I don’t even place Custer on par with Stuart.
