Korean is rapidly growing in popularity, in a language-learning boom driven by the popularity of the country's pop stars.
A desire to learn the lyrics of K-Pop hits like Gangnam Style has boosted the Korean language's popularity explode in countries like the US, Canada, Thailand and Malaysia.
A report by the Modern Language Association shows that Korean uptake in US universities rose by almost 14% between 2013 and 2016, while overall language enrolment was in decline.
The latest statistics show 14,000 students are learning Korean in the US, compared to only 163 two decades earlier.
The language learning website Duolingo launched a Korean course last year because of rising demand. It quickly attracted more than 200,000 pupils....

I wish I’d learned more while stationed there but I was awful busy both times.
Our cultural motivations are horrendous. You learn to speak Korean because of you dig their crap music and not kimchi?! Bizarre.

I eat kimchi all the time. Bulgogi, Bimbimbap, etc. I prefer Bulgogi to all but the best steak.
I also think that K-Drama contributed to the popularity of the Korean language. It’s not just K-Pop.
Right on! If people are learning Korean because of this horrendous K-pop garbage I would think we are way far down the cultural slope. If they learn it because they dig something worthwhile like beef bulgogi I am into it. Promote good food and culture, it’s not that hard.

K-Pop, from what I can see, is just their adaptation of the boy and girl group phenomena that we’ve had for many years. It is very popular throughout Asia and beyond. Places like Vietnam, the Philippines and both Chinas.
Right, it is like the worst garbage. I can’t believe anyone admits to actually digging this crappola. But they do, and aren’t afraid to tell folks about it. It’s kinda scary when you think about how many folks out there choose to subject themselves to complete garbage, and then publicly proclaim how much they dig it. They may as well be aliens to me.

I liked PSY but only as a sly dig on rap. choreography was pretty intricate, but utterly tasteless.
I speak Korean and a little Russian. It is nice to know people are discovering Korean food...and in L.A. it can be pretty authentic stuff that Westerners are being exposed to, not just food but Koream spa culture etc...
K- pop is horribly commercial and materialistic, but the country’s arts and culture scene *historically* is definitely inspiring and distinguished in many ways, from neighboring China and Japan. Traditional dance, especially the drumming, the costumes (hanboks), pottery, painting, and theater — all worthwhile.
Modern Korean filmmaking and acting can be of very high quality. And the TV series have a cult international following, and aren’t as cheesy as the K-Pop scene.
And in terms of the Western arts world, Koreans have made srrong strides in classical music and ballet.
There’s also Tae Kwon Do...as a door into the culture.

I (sort of) agree that America’s popular entertainment was similar, but I also do not agree.
Korean (and some other cultures) have a much stronger focus on family. It is very strong in Asia.
That is something which just isn’t as strong in America.
Never was. Never likely will be. There are lots of differences between all of the countries, but I don’t think the Asian countries will see the sink into moral mess, that happened in America with so many in the entertainment field.
I think in Asia it is driven by people who strongly support the family.
I don’t think that is frankly, as important in America.
It just isn’t.
America has lots of things which are just wonderful, about it. But the family, really needs more focus in the US.
All of life, is really about family.
It is time for Americans, to focus as a culture, more on family.
All Americans.
Not just some social groups. Everyone.

America was far more family oriented in the 80's because it still had lots of influence from the generations of the 50's and earlier. The left and their media backers have been concertedly working towards dismantling family ties for many decades now and their efforts have been quite successful. They are well aware that people are far easier to control and influence when they are separated from familial units.
That's just another reason for us to embrace Asian cultures - they can help undo the damage being done to our kids by leftist schools and media.
I spent lots of time researching kpop and downloading videos to give to my nieces trying to turn them on to it which was somewhat successful. Really wish they were into it enough to want to learn Korean though, that would likely give them a big leg up in the future job market. Here's some more kpop examples:
