Boar’s Head is all they use

Not so. You have to specify Boar’s Head to get it. I prefer the ‘regular,’ myself.

I love shopping at Publux. I am always greeted by the employees. Anytime I don’t know where something is they walk me to it. If I have a special request they go out of there way to get it

I eat one of the sandwiches at least once a week

Oh. People who’ve lived here (”touching” Knoxville) forever consider it East TN. I figure that once you cross the line to Central Time Zone, you’re “east”.

When I moved here I was told about the three distinct Tennessees — East, Middle (Nashville), and West (Memphis), and there’s supposed to be some kind of rivalry. It’s always interesting.

I stopped by Portillo’s while leaving Chicago, and really enjoyed their Italian Beef. Simply a great sandwich.

Then I hear from all my Chicago friends that “Portillo’s isn't the best”, “not the same since they sold out” and so on.

So who makes the best Italian Beef in Chicago, or preferably, in the suburbs, so I can find a parking spot?

I found a deli shop south of Austin that was a country store and deli. Great food, plenty of it and cheap. Was probably run by descendants of Germans that moved in 140 years ago.

These sorts of stores are getting harder to find, since the owners kids all want to go the college route.

Forgot to mention, the Farmer’s Market, grilled veggie sandwich, at Newk’s is out of this world. Caramel cake is delicious too, just make sure it comes to room temp before you eat it.

Yes, the shrimp po boy is good. Soups are tasty too. Actually I like everything I ever had there, but the grilled veg sandwich is the thing I miss since ours closed. We can’t figure out why it closed, it was always busy, food was good at reasonable price, and service was efficient and friendly.

“Then I hear from all my Chicago friends that “Portillo’s isn’t the best”, “not the same since they sold out” and so on.”

Those people are wrong. Nothing has changed since the acquisition. It’s a solid Italian Beef sandwich.

“So who makes the best Italian Beef in Chicago,”

Mr. Beef, no question. Sorry, no suburban locations. Hit the original on North Orleans. It’s worth it. Best beef sandwich on the planet.

Best,

L

They have a store brand meat they use. Boarshead is more expensive but worth it.

So I had a meeting in Chicago at Huron and Orleans. Saw the Mr. Beef across the block. Didn't realize that it was the original.

And couldn't get my customer to head there for a great sandwich. He wanted a charred steak at Wildfire. So we went there at spent $150. Very good steak but ...

Was I really any happier than I would have been with a $10 Italian Beef sandwich?

Me thinks not.

We have a Publix about a mile away

Kroger is a poor comparison

Unions

Next time hit Babette’s on Kinsey. Steaks are worth every penny. Much better than Wildfire. Get the roasted bone marrow appetizer. It’s meat butter.

Hit Al’s for desert.
