That would be a little of a stretch and I am not sure it would stand in court. The Army does have a voting assistance rep in each company level unit. I performed that duty while in Iraq. I don’t think a direct order would effect one single young soldiers mind. If it doesn’t involve an xbox they don’t have time for it. Next you have to register in your home precinct. It would be a monumental task to get all those melon heads regestered. Lets face reality, there are those of us who vote because it is our civic responsibility and there are those who don’t and bitch. I think the better solution is to stomp out voter fraud.

What Trump DOES have the authority to do, is order that overseas military absentee ballots be given priority transport.

In the 1864 election when the fate of the Union really did hang in the balance, whole Army units went home to vote. Because they were usually from the same areas of the same state, it was easy to do. Lincoln made sure he would win and the war would go on to its successful conclusion.

“...Every military unit would have a voting officer that could register everyone in one week-military efficiency....”

The original poster ia a bit behind the times, as several other posters have pointed out. The command hierarchy has encouraged all troops at every level and of every rank & grade to vote if they wish to. It’s been a commonplace of life in the military for decades. As Slingwing pointed out, each unit appoints “voter assistance reps” to help folks obtain absentee ballot materials from their home of record. The job is often assigned to a junior officer as an additional duty. If an individual’s home of record is in the local area, generous time off is granted to permit them to cast their ballot in person.

What the hierarchy does NOT do is suggest voting for specific candidates, voting a specific way on ballot initiatives, referred measures, or in any identifiable ideological or policy-supporting fashion. Any hint of “undue influence” is fastidiously avoided.

DIRTYSECRET is wildly misinformed if he thinks military members might vote in any monolithic fashion. They may cut their hair in accordance with regulations, wear the same uniforms, and march in the same direction when formed up, but they are as individualistic as anyone in the country. There isn’t much ideological groupthink ... each member has their own reasons for joining up: some quite personal, others very public, just as each has their own rationale for voting a specific way. Or for not voting at all.

I think it would. I know I would be strongly inclined to vote against the guy who gave that order.

LOL yeah. I would probably have done the same back in the day.

Being contrary whenever possible was a large part of my service lifestyle.

Maxine Waters would be blabbering “Impeach! Impeach! Impeach!” so fast she’d be spraying everyone in the front row of the audience with spit.

Say what? Most units do have voting personnel to assist those stationed out of their State or out of country...this idea is like those where someone wishes someone in power would do something un-Constitutional to effect a result they favor because their idea is one of them that is bigger than the Constitution.
