I was investigated by the FBI in connection to a visit to a Communist country (Czechoslovakia before the fall of Communism) and a penpal which I reported and which was legal. I was questioned under oath and without a lawyer. In answer to every question, I told the total truth and I was not questioned again. Of course, I was not being investigated by Mueller.
And, the FBI did not have a vested interest in convicting you for political purposes.
