I was a very young boy in the 1960s. During Christmastime my Mom would take me Christmas shopping in downtown Lansing, Michigan, and we would have lunch at the Woolworth's counter. Having a burger, fries, and a chocolate shake while spending the day Christmas shopping was the highlight of this young boy's year.

Sears and Roebuck were the first mass marketers via their catalogs. They totally missed internet marketing. They should have been Amazon. They failed due to management.

If their management was astute they would have crushed Amazon like a bug. They were not astute, Jeff Bezos was.

I saw here at FR that Penney’s stock is now below $1.00, i.e. junk stock.

I worked for Sears while in grad school, Catalog Sales. When run properly, it was profitable and a good place for young kids to get their first job.

The major problems are the Company Executives, not the employees. However, I believe it was crime that drove Sears out of DC. None are on the list of those being closed, probably because there haven’t been any in DC for decades.

Sears could have been “Amazon” if they were run properly.

Yep - there was a Woolworth’s just down the road from me (and a Kresge’s, but even at 8 I didn’t like it as much) and the lunch counter was nice - especially with the balloons on the wall with lower prices for the normally 39 cents banana splits.....got one for 15 cents once.....

Bought a dorm sized Samsung microwave oven on sale at Woolworth in 1987. I've used it every day since.

Read the reviews on the new models, and they are crap.

They don't last past a couple months and tend to catch on fire.

The display on ours is broken and a new one cast about $100 so we're just going to keep using it until it finally gives up the ghost.

These days everything is designed with planned obsolescence.

For all the complaining about using up earth's resources, there sure is a lot of irresponsible use of them in that area.

All for the $$$$$$.
