The US Defense Department expects China to add military bases around the world to protect its investments in it ambitious One Belt One Road global infrastructure program, according to an official report released on Thursday.
Beijing currently has just one overseas military base, in Djibouti, but is believed planning others, including possibly Pakistan, as it seeks to project itself as a global superpower.
Chinas advancement of projects such as the One Belt, One Road Initiative (OBOR) will probably drive military overseas basing through a perceived need to provide security for OBOR projects, the Pentagon said in its annual report to Congress on Chinese military and security developments.
China will seek to establish additional military bases in countries with which it has a longstanding friendly relationship and similar strategic interests, such as Pakistan, and in which there is a precedent for hosting foreign militaries, the report said.
That effort could be constrained by other countries wariness of hosting a full-time presence of the Peoples Liberation Army, the report noted.
But target locations for military basing could include the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the western Pacific.
The report came as the Pentagon also warned that deepening Chinese activities in the Arctic region could also pave the way for a strengthened military presence, including the deployment of submarines to act as deterrents against nuclear attack.
The assessment is included in the US militarys annual report to Congress on Chinas armed forces.
The Pentagon report noted that Denmark has expressed concern about Chinas interest in Greenland, which has included proposals to establish a research station, establish a satellite ground station, renovate airports and expand mining.
Civilian research could support a strengthened Chinese military presence in the Arctic Ocean, which could include deploying submarines to the region as a deterrent against nuclear attacks, the report said.
Even more reason to end the toxic trading relationship we have with this competitor/enemy by raising tariffs until we get rid of them as an unfair, spying, industrial and tech secret thieving parasitic trading partner. And the compromised Joe Biden whose son has a 1.5 billion dollar loan that daddy help him get when VP from the Chinese says they are not a competitor. Throw their kids out of our university STEM courses too by no longer extending them educational visas.
We are in this dilemma over Venezuela and we are on the defensive around the world against Chinese advances precisely because we wrongfooted in Iraq and we were obsessed with Walmart at home.
Yep.
They’ve been doing some such for a while.
Deep water port in Pakistan is an example.

They moved in in Panama as we were moving out!
Step 1: Arrange for a Marine Expeditiary Unit to visit Djibouti on a Goodwill Tour
Step 2: Land the Marines for a Parade.
Step 3: Let the leader of Djibouti know that the Government of the United States would not be averse to him nationalizing all Chinese assets and keeping the proceeds for himself, and that the10,000 Marines in his capital would be happy to guarantee his security during the transition, and set up defensive capabilities and infrastructure to replace the departing Chinese.
Step 4: Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
Sound like they wanna eat America’s lunch. Maybe the ghost of Margaret Thatcher can pass on the news to Lobotomy Joe
Yep
Good post.
China has no need for military bases globally like all the bases that America has. They are not stupid. They do not view themselves as the world’s policeman. They do not think like the image that the media portrays.
The article seems trying to posture for increased military spending. As most pro-America military articles are.
Watch the movie “too big to fail”. IF China wanted to cause a collapse of the United States, it would do so economically, not militarily. And, if you have been paying attention to this, you can see just how easily they could do so. Especially since the Federal Reserve has pretty much wrecked the financial foundation that America was built upon.
Thank you, Jimmy Carter. /s
” Especially since the Federal Reserve has pretty much wrecked the financial foundation that America was built upon.”
Amen
Yes this is a bunch of neocon scare talk.
When the Pentagon Posse takes the southern border crises seriously I will at that point start to believe anything they tell me.
Bingo.
So America is stupid.
You pretty much suck.
Remember everything the Chicoms do the Russkies tried with disastrous results.
ANY economy that is already on the downslope-—and the Chicoms are very close-—is cutting its throat with military expansion.
Research shows that Hitler’s “economic miracle” began to fade after about 2 years as he started to absorb more territory. These states did supply some raw materials (not enough) and labor (more important) but still the Third Reich ended up subsidizing them. It was far worse with Russia, which ended up subsidizing its entire conquered empire.
About five years ago I heard a Chinese expert-—and this was when people were predicting 10% growth from the Chicoms-—outline five major challenges to the Chicom economy, any one of which would sink it. It now appears two or three of those are appearing.
It might be coincidental but it is nonetheless meaningful that this article describing the global growth and threat of the Chinese military appears immediately after a thread in which the wisdom or unwisdom of intervention in Venezuela must be considered.
We are in this dilemma over Venezuela and we are on the defensive around the world against Chinese advances precisely because we wrongfooted in Iraq and we were obsessed with Walmart at home.
