Lance Armstrong is poised to become a billionaire despite doping downfall
The New York Post ^ | December 7, 2018 | Jai Bednall

There was a time when Lance Armstrong’s downfall in cycling was going to not only equal a lifetime of shame — but also financial hardship.

Faced with lawsuits seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages for his fraudulent life as a doping cheat — and an aggressively litigious pursuer of anyone who suggested otherwise — Armstrong’s was in strife.

But in his first US television interview since sitting down with Oprah Winfrey in 2013, the cancer survivor who captured the imagination of the world while winning seven Tour de France titles — then had them stripped in the biggest doping scandal in history — has revealed he’s more than landed on his feet.

Now 47, Armstrong reached a $5 million settlement with the US federal government in April when they could have sought up to $100 million if the suit went to trial. But that doesn’t appear to come close to the windfall he’s made on an early investment in Uber.

The Texas native invested $100,000 with a venture capital firm in 2009, the bulk of which went to the ride-sharing app that he says was valued at just $3.7 million at the time.

It’s called winning! The Obama administration used taxpayer money to try to ruin Armstrong but they failed.

Read the article. Armstrong clearly not a fan of our President.

He sounds like Pete Rose. He got caught doing something against the rules. That’s what he is still angry about.

But I believe in redemption. He did do a lot with livestrong—more than most anyone else on the planet.

I am happy for him that he will be able to live out his life the way he wants. That’s about all we can hope for.

All that money won’t buy his reputation back.

Doper uber alles.

Would you say the same about Contador? Ulrich? Pantani? Landis? Hamilton? Wiggins? Froome? Even Mercxx?

Spare me the sanctimony. Armstrong was a jerk. Still is. But he won those titles against riders who were doping long before him.

I have less of an issue with Armstrong than Rose. With Armstrong, everyone uses PED and other things to improve, some of which are illegal and some of which are not, but the point is to improve your fitness regardless. Pete Rose was playing with fire on whether or not to throw matches or points.

Yeah, I get that. It’s the arrogance of someone who was the best at what they did, and then they just blew it.

Either way, moving on and doing your best is all we can do.

Relax. It was just a joke based on the “Uber” thing. I don’t follow cycling or actually have an opinion on Lance.

Lance was the best of a bad bunch. He’s had a major step back . I do believe he will make a come back his ego is too big. And the article was throwing around numbers like $3 billion.

“Everybody” doesn’t use it; several riders like Tour champions Cadel Evans and Greg LeMond never took it. What this did for Armstrong was to take a mediocre hill climber who would have been a domestique in every Tour and make his a phony champion and a billionaire. Sorry, he doesn’t cut it.

This. I dipped my toe into Cycling many years back, and found that out, everyone at the top level is doing it. So yeah, he was still one of the all time greatest, he doped, and beat fellow dopers.

Problem was Armstrong was a complete jerk about his innocence. Armstrong was as vicious as a cornered honey badger, maybe even more so and would ruin anyone who sought to exceed him or tell the truth about his doping. Armstrong slandered people, bagged phones etc. Early on he labeled one of the teams massage therapist a prostitute when she exposed his doping. Armstrong reported other cyclists for doping when they challenged him as a cyclist, he fired people who were equal or better at cycling than he was but were loyal team member, etc. Then when caught he acted like he was some choirboy. That is why redemption has been so hard for him to find.
