The point is to watch the internal noise and thoughts, and not get caught up in them like a rushing stream. We cannot hear the "still, small voice" of the Spirit when we are caught up in our head.
True, but not just that. We are to abide in the Word, and the author brushes by that a bit in order to make a sort of mushin point.
