Peanuts or peanut butter has worked well for us. I used almond slices and peanut butter. You can tell he was dying to get at the bait, but it was one instinct vying with the other, and fear won out over hunger ... until he got a bit too complacent and went to meet his maker.

Get a 5 gal bucket about 1/2 filed with water. put a dowel across the top and smear peanut butter around the center point of the dowel.
They will fall in and drown.
