Maybe the smell of the glue or smell of you handling the bait had something to do with it. Perhaps, but I thought of this early on and used latex gloves when handling the traps!

Some people trapping muskrats would boil the traps before setting them out. I know when using poison for rats at a chicken farm you can not use the same poison in two adjacent hen houses but have to alternate.
