In World War II, America produced the gauze, iodine, and syringes that allowed allied troops to soldier on in the face of bloodshed and broken bones. Times have changed. Today, America cannot produce the basic medical supplies it needs to fight COVID-19.
Alex Azar, the Health and Human Services secretary, told the House Appropriations Committee that America needs 25 times more masks than it currently has stockpiled.
Worse still, it turns out that America cannot even manufacture the masks it needs because most of the factories are in China. Evidently, it will take years for domestic mask-makers to fulfill the order placed by Americas Strategic National Stockpile. Until then we are at Chinas mercy.
This problem is not limited to masks. America imports other basic supplies like syringes and latex gloves. Even more embarrassing is the fact that we are relying on hand-me-down ventilators, many of which were donated by China, to keep the sick alive. American lives are in Chinese hands.
Offshoring poses a massive health and security risk to the American people. Consider what would happen if China were to suffer another outbreak of COVID-19, and refused to export medical equipment. American physicians will be without masks. Patients without ventilators. People would dieall in the name of economic efficiency.
Suppose that China continued exporting masks in this scenario. Do you think they would sell them for cheap? Or will they price-gouge us like the despicable hucksters selling their toilet paper hoards in New York City? My money is on the latter.
Medical supplies are just the tip of this iceberg.

This is what President Trump has been saying since he first started campaigning five years ago.
The Dems goal right now is to make it seem like all is lost unless the Dems are in power.
Im sure China owns most of American politicians so I don’t expect much to happen.
Make masks for the hospital folks. We can take care of ourselves. I bought 24 bandanas to match my different jeans.
My fear is that every year when the new virus hits, they'll demand we wear the damn things all winter long. Gag me....I happen to like fresh air.
The USA faces a problem, called the Triffin Dilemma which was outlined by an economist named Robert Triffin in the 1950s.
In sum, to be the worlds reserve currency (which the USD is) and have all the benefits that entails, it means that a country needs to continuously run large trade and investment deficits, to allow liquidity and availability of the US dollar abroad. Besides the upshot of running permanent deficits, it also means that US industry, technology and jobs will flow overseas.
In sum its a conflict between globalism, and national interest. You cant have both.
Our trade policies need to assure as little dependency on foriegn nations as possible.
Agree
Vote them OUT!
Americans are hostile to business. We have entire agencies devoted to inhibiting manufacturing. Things are going to have to get a lot worse before we can rid ourselves of the EPA, EEOC, OSHA, IRS, NRLB, the list goes on.
