History is fascinating.
Let’s assume Teddy never interfered with that election and Taft won. Then of course the rest of history would likely change accordingly. Where I am going with this is the Treaty of Versailles being so extreme it gave Hitler the opportunity to get into power.
Would Taft have insisted that treaty treat Germany a little better?
Fast forward to today. Let’s assume we tangle with Russian and win. With the dems apparently hating Russia with a purple passion, and if a dem were President, would we get the same results, being punishing Russia to the extent of starting another war?
Hard to say. Taft tired to speak little about the war most of the time, but in letters and conversations with others his disdain towards Wilson's handling of the situation was mostly that Wilson was not up to the task, was wavering and too indecisive most of the time. That suggests that Taft would have been a more forceful player in supporting Britain and France, and maybe then a bigger player in trying to shape the treaty. But, we will really never know.
