Why is it called the Masters? When the tournament began it was called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. Co-founder Clifford Roberts suggested it be called the Masters, a reference to the “masters of golf” who played in it, but Bobby Jones thought the name immodest. Roberts finally got his way in 1939.

We had this whole discussion yesterday when some “black” who are part of an elite wine experts group was complaining how in her certificate course to be wine expert was told to call her teachers “master”. But that title comes from Master Sommelier and Master of Wine - two titles among top wine experts. They are titles earned by mastery of the subject, not mastery over anyone. According them that title as a wine student is not a subject of servitude, it is out of respect for their accomplished wine expertise.

I just put my car up for sale on Craig’s List. I simply cannot in good conscience drive an auto with a Master Cylinder. The Slave Cylinders on all four wheels have been triggered a lot lately and there was a lot of unpleasant chatter from the wheel wells.

Master’ and ‘slave’ computer labels unacceptable, officials say
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) — Los Angeles officials have asked that manufacturers, suppliers and contractors stop using the terms “master” and “slave” on computer equipment, saying such terms are unacceptable and offensive.
The request — which has some suppliers furious and others busy re-labeling components — came after an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices labeled “master” and “slave” and filed a discrimination complaint with the county’s Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.
In the computer industry, “master” and “slave” are used to refer to primary and secondary hard disk drives. The terms are also used in other industries.
“Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label,” Joe Sandoval, division manager of purchasing and contract services, said in a memo sent to County vendors.
“We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review, identify and remove/change any identification or labeling of equipment components that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature,” Sandoval said in the memo, which was distributed last week and made available to Reuters.
I’m a Master Gardenener for the county I live in. I guess in the future we’ll have to be called Supremist Gardeners.
I knew the Master/Slave language was causing problems, but I didn’t know it was a concern in 2003! Wow.
It’s still used widely in servo systems, but it is often Master/Follower as much as Master/Slave.
