The tournament is talking about definition #2. Having great skill. A tournament of people having great skill at golf. A tournament of people who are MASTERS at the game of golf.

When you hear anyone say the Masters, you think of slave masters in the South. There’s nothing else, nothing special. You don’t think of someone mastering the game of golf. When has anyone mastered golf?

No, people with normally-functioning brains would think it was a tournament for people who are really good at golf. Only those who have some kind of fetish about slavery would think it has anything to do with a slave master. I don't want to give screwballs any more ideas but, since the grounds were once a plantation with slaves, maybe a name change isn't enough. Burn it, plow it under, and salt the ground!
