A reader sent me a link to a pretty great podcast by Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying. At some point in it, they bring up a new movement by BIPOC (pronounced “bye-pock”) theater makers, challenging white people in theater. They have written an open letter, called We See You, White American Theater. Here it is:

In the big scheme of things, theaters need to make money. shows that attract the most paying customers, tend to be the best investments... why do you think Cats lasted so long on broadway... old rich and white cat ladies liked them. do not expect the wealthy to last long listening to the drivel put forth in your open letter. oh, they may throw some dollars to justify their consciences, but they will soon look elsewhere unless your vitriol turns to filled seats— playing to an empty audience has the performances falling flat. Good luck, i wish you well, but as many producers in the past have found out, the audience, and Americans can be very fickle in deed.
I saw it. My daughter won the he lottery for $10 tickets in San Francisco last year, and she took me.
It’s very fast paced and hard to follow. I knew the music, so that was helpful. It is very energetic. It’s rock music, and no talking. It’s entertaining.
I had seen Anastasia the week before, and I preferred Anastasia.

I am sick to death of the outpouring of attempted guilt sent to everyone white, by everyone black.
I’ve never felt racial animosity before 2020, but it sure is present now.

A black man playing Hamilton is not appropriation.
It is more obvious than ever that blacks and whites will never be able to peacefully coexist.
Better each group go their own way, have their own separate countries and determine their own destiny.
The first step in doing so is for whites to accept that reality.
Self loathing whites can also form their own countries where they are free to kiss black asses and feet.
