Buy calibers you can use in various applications

Or that are common in cheap ammo like Tula or Wolf

Bolt is likely all you’ll ever need and it’s more reliable

Nice long range with best glass u can get

Everyday carbine maybe

A revolver

A .22 for food

Shotgun for food etc

.223

7.62 by whatever

.22lr

12 bore

9mm

You’re intersectional now

If you need FAL or fancy black guns you can get them from govt forces you kill

*** Same question as, “What’s better - a hammer or a screwdriver?” *****

Sledge hammer?
Claw hammer?
Ball Peen hammer?”
Rubber mallet?
Rock hammer?

Large slotted screwdriver?
Small slotted screwdriver?
Phillips Head?
.
.
.
.
Hmm - looks like I need more guns!

I went with the Savage semi auto 22 magnum with 25 round mag. lots of ammo for cheap and being scoped and will drive tacks will take down any deer with a head shot within a hundred yards.

For prepping situations, hunting or homestead defense? That would be the deciding factor I should think. The defense aspect would outweigh the hunting for me.

Needing the capability for quick, and perhaps multiple backup shots, the semi is clearly superior. Works for hunting as well.

Bolt gun for low density threats would work, if the operator can run the gun quickly. Many of us already have skill with semis from military training, not so much bolt guns.

CMP is getting $1200 currently. Put togethers, new stock, 5 million serial numbered, basically “ new, as issued”. Go to Gunbroker for .30 M2 AP ammo ( not cheap) and you will have 99 percent of American gun owners beat with the first shot....incendiary and API harder to find, ( for defeating light armor and all vehicles) but running about $5 a round. The AR15 rush is fine and dandy for engaging targets in the open ( unless they are wearing a vest), think smarter, taking away ALL their cover, vests and vehicles is the winning ticket.

I suspect York would have been all over a M-1 Garand or M-14 if offered.

...all that said, how do you defeat the bad guy with AP? Standoff, a good large caliber bolt that can give you 18” groups or less at 500 yds...that can get expensive, quality optics, range finder ( for one shot contact),match ammo, and a lot of practice....I have an old 300 HH Mag 1000 yd winner, but I find it immoral to shoot at a target at long distance you can not positively identify.

‘Zackly. Biggest question being is there something like an AR-10 platform package that would switch upper to a lighter cartridge so you have a high density area close quarter package plus an optional range setup.

I was chatting a few years back with an acquaintance who traveled to Syria to get some family out. He swore by the AK for city/town action and he said he went through near 3000 rounds on the trip. He noted there were a LOT of fancy nice weapons he liked which were also superior but when it came down to having to use one for real, the AK was something that he was well versed in and it was reliable.

I later reflected on that and realized that the “wrong” weapon for most Americans in a SHTF scenario is going to be the one they put $2K into but never put much time into it range or field wise...

The best prepper/bug out rifle is the one you have. I have a Ruger 10-22 with 300 rounds of ammo in my truck, always. Ruger evens gives you a fantastic bug out bag with the rifle. You can raise a lot of hell real quick down range with 5 25 round magazines. I’ll take the .22 semi automatic any day over whatever is sitting in the gun safe.

I am a fan of pistol caliber lever rifles. 357 magnum is my preferred since I have a couple of 357 handguns to accompany the two rifles I own in 357.

A pistol caliber carbine is very potent for home defense, and will not deafen you like an AR indoors will. I would purchase a suppressor for my AR pistol but I just cannot abide the absurdity of paying the government to allow me my Constitutional Right. After SHTF I will fabricate a suppressor and ignore the government absurdities, AFTER the SHTF. Right now I abide by the laws regardless of their stupidity, even as they negate a health issue.

The only thing I would argue about pump action, and I love them personally; is that they can take a bit more practice as the action needs to be fully pumped. Don’t fully work the pump and I’ve seen them jam up from people thinking they have to be extra gentle.
