Do Dobermans ever do shepherding?
They can do anything, especially since they have Beauceron, a herding breed, in their genetic makeup.
My second one, the Wonder Dobe was sired by a field champion, whose owner hunted birds with him.
I never gave any thought to that until my dad paid a fortune for a Brittany Spaniel with field champion lines.
All summer long, I had to set the pigeons in their cages all over the field and dad would send his dog out to point them.
Bless the dog’s heart, he sucked.
I sat with my dog watching this, day after day until it finally got next to me and I said “Tito, go find ‘em”.
He shot under the fence and into the field and executed picture perfect points on all 12 pigeons over 4 acres in a matter of minutes.
My dad just stood there, mouth agape.
He muttered a few cuss words and took the dog back to his kennel and the dog was “just a pet” after that day.
And I swear Tito was smirking when he walked past him.
Dobermans are working dogs, not herding dogs. Dobermans were bred for police/military work, unlike Rottweilers which are actually bred herding, but have been put into the working dog classification.
I am a Rottweiler owner/breeder, and Rotties get a bad name due mostly to idiot owners. Like Dobies, Rotties are very loyal, affectionate, family oriented dogs. They are not for everyone. Both breeds want to, and thrive on working.
So if you are looking for a herding dog that is also a protective dog, get a GSD or a Rottweiler. If you are looking for a protection only go with the Dobie. Either way you can’t go wrong.
