Orcas are highly intelligent and successful predators which take down great white sharks and the largest whales. Surely it’s not that shocking when they get curious about what people taste like?

They saw the 1977 movie “Orca” with Richard Harris, and Bo Derek.

I know the conventional wisdom is that orcas are not dangerous to humans but I’m not convinced. You’d never get me on one of those kayak tours that go into orca pods. I remember reading that the Inuit won’t kayak near orca. Maybe they aren’t hunting humans and just mistake kayaks for a seal but an exploratory bite from an orca is probably fatal. Orca are the apex predator and when we’re in their environment, we’re potential food.

I’m guessing they’ve had some bad encounters with small boats and people...

I wonder if the activities of the “refugees” from Africa may have altered the Orca’s perception of humans...

There has not been a documented attack on humans by Orca until now.

Anyone remember a SEA HUNT episode (1957) with Lloyd Bridges in which a “Killer Whale” attacks divers? In that episode he says “the Killer whales should be wiped out!”

A family was sailing across the Pacific in 1971 when orcas attacked and sank their boat.

The Robertson family. I recall the book "Survive the Savage Sea".

It’s possible they were actually trying to warn the boats that there was danger, possibly great white sharks. Orcas are dolphins, protectors. Dolphins have been known to protect people from sharks on many occasions, including attacking the sharks themselves.

None of the above causes.

Its the mermen revolting and using their buddies to take out targets of opportunity - mermen are aquatic offshoot of human race from one of the human races aquatic stages hundreds of thousands of years ago. Them or aliens

There are actually two orca cultures With two distinct languages. There are pods that cruise the shorelines, travel slower and are more peaceful. The other culture lives out in the sea, travels fast and is more aggressive.
