I understand it’s frightening about things being revealed in the ice now being exposed. But what is equally frightening to me is, what happened that suddenly large portions of the globe were suddenly covered in ice?

Indeed. "Global cooling" to the point of yet another ice age...or even mini ice age...would be devastating to plants, and therefore animals and therefore us.

in 500’s a major caldera volcano blew off the coast of South America caused weather changes for years possibly many more we dont yet know about not to mention small asteroid hits all over.
