He was a bit of a bastard in private life, and as a teetotaling Christian the Rat Pack and nightclub scene left me cold, so I didn't buy anything of his when he was alive. But he was one of those people who (like Prince Philip), having been there all your life even if you didn't think you were paying much attention, and being in a class by himself at what he did, really left a big hole behind when he died.
