Foot pursuits are to be discontinued for reasons including the officer believing they wouldn’t be able to control the suspect in the case of a confrontation.
Chicago police will be adopting a new foot chase police that looks to limit when an officer can engage in the tactic. This comes after two cases of police killing someone they were in pursuit of on foot.
The new policy, which goes into effect on June 11, prohibits foot chases in connection to minor traffic offenses or for criminal offenses less than a Class A misdemeanor, "unless the person poses an obvious threat to the community or any person," according to USA Today.
The policy says that foot pursuits are now "appropriate only when there is probable cause for an arrest or it is believed an individual has committed, is committing or is about to commit a crime."
Foot pursuits are to be discontinued if someone requires medical attention, if the officer loses the suspect’s location, if the officer believes they wouldn’t be able to control the suspect in the case of a confrontation, and "if the need to apprehend the subject is not worth the risk to responding officers, the public or the subject."
Supervisors are allowed to issue the command to discontinue a chase at any time, and must report foot pursuits to the city's Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
The policy also "ensures" that body cameras remain on for the entirety of the incident.
"The important parameters outlined in this policy will not only protect our officers, the public and potential suspects during foot pursuits, but it also serves as a step forward in our mission to modernize and reform our police department," said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
The Chicago Police Department will continue to host internal focus groups as they finalize and revise the new police, said Police Superintendent David Brown. The final version of the police is expected by September.
The public will be able to ask questions regarding the policy at a live virtual webinar on Tuesday.
The policy change comes after 13-year-old Adam Toledo, and 22-year-old Anthony Alvarez were killed in two separate incidents earlier this spring, sparking mass protests.
Toledo was shot by an officer on March 29 after the officer chased him down a West Side alley.
Alvarez was shot while running from police on the Northwest side, with police shooting him multiple times in the back.
"Because foot pursuits are one of the most dangerous actions that police officers can engage in, we cannot afford to wait any longer to put a policy in place that regulates them," said Lightfoot.
Just shoot em’
Fine by me.
So, no car chases, no foot pursuit.
Cops are reduced to taking a report.
Let. It. Burn.
How about “Cops no longer allowed to arrest criminals if anyone in the community might be offended”. It’s only a step or two away, so why not go right to it now so nobody gets hurt feelings. I’m so glad that I retired from Law Enforcement many years ago.
Re-imagining policing = let them break the law and don’t chase them.
If there are far too many young black men in prison, stop arresting them and stop putting them in prison.
Problem solved.
“Cops are reduced to taking a report.”
They’re basically being reduced to “Mall Cop” status.
Now they can get back to thier primary objective as Police Officers in Chicago, Raise Revenue for the City by issuing Tickets...
People are not gonna have any respect for police.
Darwinian theory coming to your town.
Get ready or get run over.
‘Get out of here you crazy teenagers!!!!!”.
Don’t police get into foot chasing precisely because they aren’t allowed to shoot a fleeing suspect?
As another said here, no car chases and no foot chases, then police are reduced to simply filling out paperwork in a police report.

Globalist socialists have long wanted us all herded into cities where we can more easily be controlled, yet seemingly every policy they implement has had the opposite real world effect.
By all means — publicize the policy so the criminals know. LOL
Looks like cops will only patrol downtown Chicago? And once office workers go home at 5 pm, you’re on you’re own? Southside is basically “no go” zone 24/7/365.
Can they use a mallcop segway?
Just shoot em’
twice
Chicago cops can all put on all their equipment and go jump into the middle of Lake Michigan. They deserve zero respect. Not since they took the Second City Cop blog private after the January 6th gathering.
