Why can’t they mix all three flavor’s?.. Im sure it has something to do with one too many times people have complained the flavors weren’t mixed right and the McDonald’s had to throw it away and try again. Self entitled a-holes are why we all cant get along.
It may have more to do with automation. You push a button and get a set amount. Small medium or large cup. You cant just get 1/3 of a cup..

Chain store employees are forced to follow all kinds of picayune rules laid down by bean counter MBAs in coroporate headquarters. Sometimes they send investigative "customers" into the locations to challenge the employees and see if all rules are followed. If they do it for one person, they would have to customize every order, and there would be a significant cost across the chain.
Short answer? Because the manager said so.

More likely that the cashier's computer would communicate the size to the drink dispensing machine when you pay for your order at the first window.
