I vaguely remember the same machinations during the 70’s. Consumers are more tolerant of shrinking packages than growing prices. But they can only shrink things so far, and then the mask falls off.

It’s a pendulum swing. We cycle through both ends every decade or so. Shrink product to maintain price, then “new bigger size” to increase price.

I remember in the 70’s when the one pound can of coffee became a 13 ounce “pound” of coffee.

Yes, a half-gallon of ice cream is now "1.5 quarts" or 75% of a half gallon. This is a price increase of 33%.
Now a pound of coffee is 12 ounces or 75% of a pound. This is a price increase of 33%.

A pound of bacon is now 12 oz. Still have the 16 oz if you look,a half gallon of orange juice is now 58 oz. I also remember when the Burger King Whopper came out. You had to use two hands to eat it. Not any more. However these are the things the companies have to do to stay competitive.

as consumers, most of us have known about shrinkage for some time....
what do we do about it?
I've been switching to somewhat cheaper store brands with better value...
the old trick of buying the bigger package to save money is not always true anymore.....I check unit pricing and the difference is moot most of the time.
