Sad if true. I liked Mr Sulu on the show and the rest of the cast. Most of the regular cast were great.
Spock,the best by far.
Bones,Scotty,Uhura,Checkov...and Yoeman Rand...were excellent.
Kirk was OK.
Sulu was horrible. And I believed that long before I learned he was a perv.

Kirk was OK??!!
It's not Star Trek without the hammy sanctimony that only William Shatner could bring to the part. He sold the part, going to the edge, and only occasionally going over.
That man stuck around, and even after thought of as being typecast, made it again and again as T.J. Hooker, Denny Crane, the Priceline Guy, Oldsmobile Commercials, his own talk show, movies in Esperanto, cameos all over the place, the list goes on and on.
He always comes to work on time (at 90), is not too big for small parts, is willing to poke fun at himself. Yes, his range is limited. He has to play a ham, which both Kirk and Denny Crane are.
His performance as the murderer in Columbo was good (Nimoy's was better when he was villain). But Jeffrey Hunter could not have refereed Bones and Spock the way Shatner could.
