House Democrats have released their draft plan to make free community college a reality across much of the country, at a price tag of over $100 billion. The obsession with a zero sticker price for community college is odd, given that community colleges are already one of the most affordable sectors of America’s higher-education system. Average tuition is less than $4,000 per year, and after existing financial aid is applied, the typical student pays no tuition at all.
The more pressing concern at community colleges is not the price of admission, but what that tuition payment is buying students.
Most students say the top reason for pursuing higher education is increasing their earnings power. Some programs at community colleges will help them realize that potential. Consider the A.S. in Registered Nursing degree at California’s College of the Sequoias. According to federal government data, graduates of this program will earn a median salary of $81,400—well above the U.S. median income and even most four-year college degrees.
Nationwide, more than 94 percent of community college associate’s degrees in registered nursing yield median salaries of $50,000 or more. Career-oriented fields in health care and manufacturing are usually good choices for students who want to see a financial return on their educational investment. But America’s community college sector is not a uniformly powerful engine of upward mobility.

The price of buying votes and destroying America is way up!
If everyone has a college degree, then no one has a college degree.
"...free community college..." and "...a price tag of over $100 billion..." seems to pretty much undefine the word "free."
“Free-ish”
Counties & states subsidize CC’s.
No need for the Fed Gov to fund CC’s.
CC is already practically free (and sometimes completely free), especially for students who receive financial aid.
It takes two years of Community College to bring most students up to eighth grade proficiency.
You will never get elected if you continue to harp in common sense.
CNN - “Mostly free”
I understand what you are saying but there is a huge demand for vocational education programs that are NOT taught in high schools or typical 4 year college programs.
I know the president of the local community college here in NH. It was formerly called the NH Vocational Technical College.
Their program in automotive body work is sponsored by several local automotive dealerships. Every person coming out of the program has a job. Some of the local car dealers pay for kids to go through the program.
In addition, they are trying to get an airplane mechanic program. An air traffic controller program. Even a airplane pilot program. Another program they are trying to develop is welding.
So, no I do not think community college should be free for ALL programs. We certainly do not need more Gender Studies graduates. We need more DIRTY JOBS graduates.
2 years? That’s why the community colleges should go on the trimester system. Too much time off for spring/summer and holiday breaks. Make it national and make free just the certificate programs. RN’s in 2 years? I thought it was 3-4.
Community colleges are too laid back. The transition after high school should be more serious. Adult world now awaits. A 40 hour/wk job may be too much for a 20 year old certificate holder but a shorter work week at the start would be good for young folks that need their hang-out time with friends. Doable.
I’m all in favor of vocational training for those who really want it. But it cannot be watered down to the lowest common denominator level of the dumbest student.
And students have to be invested in it. Free education is a death knell to that education.
Let’s start handing out titles, too!
I wanna be a Duke.

I prefer daisy duke ...
Welders are in such demand here in North Idaho that recent vo-tech grads can be making $100,000 per year not long after graduation. And the shops still can’t find good welders to hire.
Community colleges offer more than just nuursing degrees. They offer associates degrees in engineering, aerospace, avionics, and other degrees in scientific pursuits.
I aggregated the necessary points for my AS degree in Avionics/Aerospace Technology, from Victor Valley College, San Bernardino Community College, and the Community College of the Air Force.
The big problem with Gender Studies, White Privilege Studies, Toxic Masculinity Studies, and Radical Feminism is those grads have zero marketable skills and all they can do with it is become “activists” and lead BLM marches or teach the same agitprop crap to other rubes.
The problem is that people like Patrisse Marie Khan-Cullors Brignac get filthy rich at it and buy four houses in luxury neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Or grifters like Obama are able to buy a $20 million palace on 30 acres in Martha’s Vineyard.
How do you know?
I might look really good in cutoff jeans.
…………………………..
OK
You’re right.
My wife insisted on getting a 2 year degree in Child Care s she could go from a lucrative job programming to min. wage. She wanted to take care of our kids & get paid before they went to school. She wanted to continue on and get a four year degree in Child Care to continue getting paid minimum wage. Told her absolutely not.
Similarly, my son wanted to go to Univ. of N. Dakota to become a pilot. Told him I wasn’t going to sign a $200k loan for a $30k a year job. We had a neighbor who was a pilot and he told my son if that was his dream to join the military and let Uncle Sam teach you.
