Ask your friends if they ever read the Tripods trilogy. The Bible’s book of Revelation is a lot shorter (12,000 words) and it isn't fiction. See Revelation chapters 13, 14, 19, 20.

My wife is reading "The White Mountains" to my son at bedtime. I have read the trilogy to my daughter. "The City of Gold and Lead" was great. The BBC series started okay, but went downhill and stopped midway through.
Unusually well-written for modern youth literature.
