Eradication may be the proper response. It is what they did to Christians in the lands they conquered. It was done gradually, with taxes and constraints over centuries.
There is a major Christian town in Sicily that was conquered by the Arabs. It was reconquered about a century later by mainland Italians. By that time, about 80% of the population had converted to Islam from social pressure, the jizya, etc. So it takes about 100 years.
The Italians who reconquered the city spared the Christians, but put all the Muslims to the sword.
