Alaska Snow Crab Harvest Cut By 88% After Population Crash In Bering Sea

Higher temperatures in the Bering Sea, a marginal sea of the Northern Pacific Ocean, could be responsible for one of the lowest levels set in snow crab harvest in more than four decades, according to the Seattle Times.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has set the 2021-22 catch limit of snow crab to 5.6 million pounds –down 88% from last season.

Scientists who study snow crabs attempt to understand what happened to the crabs, native to shelf depths in the North Pacific Ocean.

They discovered that sea bottom warmed, pushing the crabs farther to the northwest and deeper waters. But scientists, in testimony to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council last week, noted there has also been a massive downturn in the population – not just migration out of survey zones.

“We really do think that … some sort of mortality event did occur,” said Katie Palof, an Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologist who advises the council.

“Mortality event” certainly sounds ominous.

Massive die off of snow crabs triggered by massive number of COVID-19 masks being washed into the oceans. 🙀😿

not just migration out of survey zones.

Right. Since they cannot find them were they expect to see them they are obviously "suffered a mortality event". Absence of proof is not proof of absence

US Customs cut off Fish stick and fillet imports. Now crab. In addition to beef, pork, chicken, etc etc. Fuel prices exploding. Inflation soaring. Money dumps as no goods can come in.

Nobody can be this stupid. This is their plan to finally reduce America on the world stage and bring us under globalist control.

Mass hunger, and desperate concentration on just finding sufficient food is how they mean to control people.

They will still get them, but fewer at higher prices. Then the Russians may just decide to make a killing by harvesting lots on their side of the border during Opilio season.

Should make in interesting season on Deadliest Catch.

The pollock is American caught, transshipped by rail from Port of Vancouver through Canada to the East Coast - CBP didn’t like the Canadian shipping, preferring the shipments go by US Flagged ships through the Panama Canal instead. This is not a shortage, but a government created problem.
