Not only that, but to pay for the whole damn thing, after the fact, the tolls were moved out of downtown to spare the Brahmins and instead heaped upon the western (GOP) commuters.
"But that's the sad fact of life since the Legislature took the easy way out in the way way out, created the Massachusetts Highway System and dumped all escalating Big Dig costs on western commuters -- except those beyond Exit 6."
I know a guy who was an Civil Engineer with the firm in charge of the Big Dig. After that he spent a couple years on the Tampanzee/Mario Cuomo bridge. His wife worked for the local school administration system. Their entire careers were living off government money. Now, they are on SS, medicare and government pensions. Both loyal Dems.
Understood—but the Big Dig actually was finished—with all its flaws.
Great comment from the link on California Bullet Train:
“Time travel will have been invented before this boondoggle is completed. Either that, or we will all have moved to Mars.”
And that is the problem. Obamas $787B arra bill only spent 5% on infrastructure (shovel ready was the joke). No one has ever disclosed how much went where. Fool me once…..
I actually think the Big Dig was a huge improvement to downtown Boston. Especially getting out to Logan coming from the north. Adding the Ted Williams tunnel was huge. That expressway used to block going over to the North End too.
The biggest winner was the Boston Bayside Hotel. They started building it when the elevated expressway was right behind it. A few years later there was a park.
I remember reading a story about some company that won a Federal government contract to produce several hundred 4’x8’ signs for $1800/sign. It was a painted sheet of plywood that stated this project funded by the Obama Stimulus bill, blah, blah blah. They put them all over the country wherever there was a project. The company was probably owned by the brother of some Dem congressman.
And this is the bill with among other horrible provisions requires all cars to have an active anti DUI device by 2025. So I guess if it passes as is we all get to blow in a car breathalyzer to go anywhere
I can’t count the number of ways this goes badly.
My favorite grift (besides Solyndra) is Nancy Pelosi’s brother in law’s involvement in the DOE $737M loan guarantee to Crescent Dunes , Tonopah, NV. Of course, Ron Pelosi denies any involvement as he had no knowledge of the plan. Riiiiiight.
If we don’t allocate money for bridge repair, how will we have money to buy iphones for crack whores squirting out babies?
The infrastructure bill was the first one, and was passed by both houses last month and signed by the President. A few Republican senators jumped on board.
As bad as that one is, the $3.75 trillion Build Back Better bill is the real crusher. Free pre-K day care, $550 billion for climate change programs, forgiveness of college loans, free medical care for illegal immigrants, and the rest going to Democrat interest groups. Also, restrictions on free speech, etc.
BBB has passed the House. It must be stopped in the Senate by Joe Manchin and Kirsten Sinema.
This country cannot build a doghouse without some lawsuit.
We need a law reform, before we can build anything new.
Otherwise, it would be just some remodeling, mostly just make up work, just to burn the money.
Thanks for the summary of events. I thought there was still one more step before we are fully saddled with this
awful bill.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but only added one lane to the road.
And restrictions on fair elections as well, e.g., requirement to show ID in order to vote will be forbidden.
When you figure out what kind of government would work any better, let me know.
What was that Churchill said, “Democracy is the worst form of government except for...”
Next up, a "news" story about how Ralph Vartebidian never wears a mask at work, and probably sexually harassed or raped someone while complaining about Critical Race Theory and the 1619 Project on January 6th. /s
I believe it added two lanes in each direction. The main thing it did was bury 1.5 miles of highway under the city and harbor. Keep in mind this is the intersection of interstates I93, I95 and I90 under a city settled in the 1600’s. They also built a brand new bridge and rebuilt a couple others.
As I stated earlier they also added a second tunnel going from Boston under the harbor out to Logan airport in East Boston.
The Ted Williams tunnel handles all commercial vehicle traffic going to and from the airport(taxis, trucks, buses, etc). The other two tunnels handle all other car traffic in one direction each.
It is actually pretty impressive when you take into account all they did in a very small area. Plus only one person died!
bkmk
I think a lot of businesses are suddenly realizing that there will be problems for them with this act.
Also, in terms of the other dictatorial government focus, I saw a promising report that Goldman Sachs was saying that the “omicron variant” was no big deal and there should be no shutdowns. I read that another major business group said that the world economy could not take another shutdown.
So maybe there’s a little practicality emerging and the whole Dem agenda will simply be kicked aside for economic reasons?
