" India, the world’s second largest producer of wheat, has banned all exports with immediate effect after a heatwave affected the crop.
A notice in the government gazette by the directorate of foreign trade, dated Friday, said a rise in global prices for wheat
was threatening the food security of India and neighboring and vulnerable countries.
A key aim is to control rising domestic prices.
Global wheat prices have increased by more than 40% since the beginning of the year.
At the same time, India’s own wheat harvest has suffered a record-breaking heatwave that is stunting production.
Even though it is the world’s second largest producer of wheat, India consumes most of the wheat it produces."
Top 10 Wheat Producing Countries (in tons of wheat produced 2020)*
1.China — 134,254,710
2.India — 107,590,000
A few weeks ago India’s forecast wheat harvest was 111 million tons.
Now it’s down to 93 million.
Thus the export ban.
A few years back, someone here on FR stated that as many people just graduated from high school in China as the entire population of the US.
The population of China is roughly five times that of the US.
Does it make sense that 20% of the country just graduated from high school?
Wow yikes!
You’re correct. I’ll not repeat it.
Update (Sunday): Wheat futures in Chicago jumped 5.9% to $12.47 a bushel Sunday evening after India restricted wheat exports to preserve its food security. Since the beginning of May, prices have skyrocketed nearly 20%.
India has not banned ALL wheat exports.
India has banned all private company wheat exports, in favour of Govt to Govt contracts. It was noticed that certain major trading houses were trying to corner a lot of the wheat, probably then profiting from artificial supply shortages and resultant increased prices. So it is this that has been banned.
All wheat exports will be handled by the Govt and will obviously be made for strategic and diplomatic reasons. Egypt will get the million tonnes it wants. Pakistan is unlikely to.
Essentially it is, in keeping with the times, a further weaponisation of trade. Indonesia did it with Palm Oil, putting the Indian Govt in a fix. If Indonesia needs wheat/rice, it'll have to send Palm oil.
That’s incredible increase! In a very scary way...
