It’s weird to think about how peaceful everything was just less than two years ago. It was about the most peaceful time world-wide in decades. Plus, gas prices were lower than they had been in years. My grocery budget was less than a hundred bucks a week (and that was including snacks to keep on hand for the grandchildren).
Wages were going up for everyone, without outrageous inflation. The housing market was steady without too much demand on either buyers or sellers. The economy was stable.
How quickly things can go south when you have communists in charge of government institutions.
The Russians are not likely to escalate fast since they don’t want to run out of playing cards in the great game.
They wish to avoid a direct military confrontation with the US.
They are willing to cause economic pain to the US and actively hostile European countries, especially shortly before election time.

Romney's essay states Russia is rattling the nuclear saber. Even if it is a bluff, which it looks like it is, it makes sense to draw up options. Putin declared in December they want NATO out of Eastern Europe. He worked for a decade to create excuses and opportunities to invade Ukraine before following through.
Putin wants a second USSR. Now what?
If we don't stand up to Putin now, when, and why wait? There are no comfortable answers. Western Europe remembers the Cold War, Eastern Europe remembers Russian rule. No one is going to back to that now. The US and 40 other countries are choosing damned if you do.
