8 out of 10 starting at 40 yards and advancing.

As far as I know Eli was carrying a factory Glock 19- no frills.
The guy in the video is offering to hook Eli up with all kinds of goodies but needs to make contact with Eli.

I used to practice shooting 50 yards with my .44 magnum Ruger Redhawk. I got pretty good. Took down two does at those distances. Handgun shooting requires ( in my humble opinion) regular practice. My abilities with a handgun have suffered considerably over the years as I get little practice. Rifle shooting on the other hand has suffered but not badly. I can still hit a kill zone at 100 yards.

Not only did he kill this shooter, but he probably dissuaded three or four other crazies from carrying out their deadly mayhem.

In this 2 minute video a pistol instructor tries a “Dickens Drill” against steel at 60 yards.

The instructor is using a red-dot optic on his Glock subcompact.

I have not seen if Dickens was using iron sights or a red dot optic. Terrific shooting either case.

The pistol instructor who took out the church shooter a few years ago did have a red dot optic.

As in most fight or flight syndrome events, “it depends” is the correct response.

Adrenalin can make one jumpy, jittery and generally worthless, but, often, again many variables dependent, it makes one rock solid, perceptive and able to leap small buildings in big bounds. A combination of kinesiology, hand eye coordination and both fine and gross motor control.

And, a survival mindset is a known key variable.

40 yards is a good way off with a fighting handgun. And, in practice, a deliberate well aimed shot with a handgun by other than a very proficient pistolero, it is difficult at best, but, when the chips are down, the background mind can and does, with adequate practical experience, make tremendous differences in outcomes.

Train as you likely will have to fight, then some more. I am quite certain this young man did not just own a gun and do wonders with it in a vacuum. He likely had a good bit of on the range and in the books background, even if he isn’t a Gunsite alum.

Well done.

This is why competitive shooting is a good, simulated environment for the self-defense minded shooter. IDPA, USPSA, 3-gun etc all have the excitement of nerves and stress- go shoot some, but remember, it’s a game, so don’t forget the tactics aspect, outside of the rulebooks.

At that range, after the first hit or two, the perp probably was focused on looking much closer for who was returning fire. He probably never saw Eli closing on him.

On a side note, I haven’t seen anything mentioned about the size of the perp. From the pictures that have been released of Sapirman, he appeared to be a pretty skinny guy, maybe less than 140 pounds and of average height.

Considering how thin he was, he made for a pretty small body mass target. With all the other data, together with what the size of the target would have been, these shots are beyond miraculous . . .

Report said perp received 8 shots?

The report I'd read here on FR said he took 10 shots, 8 hit the perp.

At that distance, that's still damn' good. The kid's a stud.

Yes, he is and he deserves credit for what he did. I mean a medal from the mayor, a parade down main street, a house, a new truck and a trust fund.

Leave a little room for divine intervention though; it was clearly in play.

The fact that Eli was prepared for the situation was helpful.

“Plan your shot, shoot your plan”

That works at the range; in combat, not so much.

Eli was reportedly advancing, and most ranges frown on shooters moving into the target area

I encourage anyone who'll listen to find a privately owned range that allows drilling. There are a number of them here in central Florida, and the practice you get in actual shooting while moving is invaluable.

Cover-to-cover advancing and shooting is very difficult. I can put an 8mm round through the 10 ring at 300m from a bench rest, but you put me in a scootshoot situation with a handgun, and my accuracy drops significantly. What this guy did is nothing short of impressive.

Eli will need some security for a while, as other leftists will try to get at him, from a much closer range.

The mall shared a characteristic of all or almost all such events i.e. it was a Gun Free Zone. That designation killed three customers and the lunatic. Courthouses should be the only gun free zones and only if they have the equipment to ensure that.

I’m curious if he ran out of ammo. Was it just a 10 round mag? I’d love to know what was going through his mind after. I don’t generally carry a spare mag.

Dicken was sufficiently practiced that “guts” was not involved. He and his girlfriend were a combat team whose actions were automatic. Chris Kyle would have been proud. The girlfriend, a nurse went immediately to the wounded to render skilled aid. Don’t leave her out of the adulation.

The video in post 25 shows the shooter hitting 9 out of 12 on a 65 yard torso target in under 10 seconds.

The range that I shot at for 35 years had a regular target setup at 50 yards. Of course, nobody was shooting back, but hitting a torso size target at 50 yards with a handgun was not difficult. I’m no better than average but I regularly hit 7 out of 7 with a 1911, 6 out of 6 with a S&W 686, 10 out of 10 with a Glock 17 and shot bullseye targets with various .22lr models.

So my evaluation of 8 out of 10 hits on a torso at 40 yards is that the shooter was good because of the situation, but wasn’t Jason Bourne. The media is showing their utter ignorance about handguns in general. I’m not shocked.
