It’s no secret that black students fare poorly on the academic achievement scale. Their scores on standardized achievement tests, their academic performance while in school, and their rates of enrollment and graduation lag far behind their white and Asian counterparts.
The persistence of this achievement gap is harmful to society. But how can we close the gap, and whose responsibility is it to do so?
To many college and university officials, the reason for the gap is racism. Moreover, colleges and universities have decided that they know how to close the achievement gap and that they should assume the primary role in doing so.
To this end, many colleges and universities have begun changing their admissions standards to ensure there will be a representative number of black students on campus. One initiative is to no longer require applicants to take a standardized test. Colleges are also altering their curricula in ways designed to help black students do better in the classroom. Efforts along these lines include eliminating or relaxing academic requirements that some educators claim are racist.
Colleges and universities are also striving to make the campus experience more inviting for black students, in the hope that this will translate into heightened academic performance. Giving official sanction to racial affinity spaces, as well as renaming buildings that are deemed to have racially problematic histories, are now the new normal.
These efforts, however, demonstrate academia’s unwillingness to hold black students primarily responsible for their own academic uplift. Largely by design, colleges and universities have taken it upon themselves to be the main agents for improving black academic achievement.
This is a profoundly misguided idea. It is premised on the assumption that colleges and universities alone can close the gap by making a few changes here and there.

You must be joking.
Ridiculous, huh? Isn’t it white people who are responsible for that?
It all starts at home IMO....having a mother AND A FATHER as upstanding and law abiding role models to guide kids in their formative years....and in many cases that ain’t happening.
Good analysis. Too many blacks continue to be their own worst enemies despite being the recipient of racial quotas and benefits granted by self-hating white leftists.
I was serious. What exactly do you disagree with?
Know wat Ima sayin', cracker?
“the goal should be raising academic achievement in blacks”
Agreed
Lots of blacks are stuck in Dem Run Hellhole Schools.
JimCrow would be proud of the continued Dem control over The New Plantation.
Stop voting for your own slavery.
As our PDJT The GOAT said “What the hell have you got to lose?”
And many are listening.
If colleges and universities want to see an improvement in black student performance, they need to address the issue with those who bear sole responsibility...black students.
That said, those students (of any race) who are motivated can be helped by offering classes that teach kids how to study (many people just don't know how) and by offering tutors and courses that teach fundamentals that weren't taught by high schools and elementary schools.
In the end though, academic achievement, like any other achievement, is only worth what one pays for it...and the price is just good old hard work.
That's because they, themselves, are inexperienced in the real world and are the lowest forms of bigots. Go watch a few seasons of BAR RESCUE and see how 95% of the feral black (AND white) bar employees respond well to a male Alpha authority (Jon Taffer) who is expert at calling out their bullsh**, while also educating them in business and discipline. Of course, many of them relapse after he leaves, but the transformations during the show recording week are often sobering.
The trouble is:
1. It’s slow. It will take a generation or two of sustained effort. Who will do that? Can’t be politicians, too slow for the election cycle. Black organizations like the NAACP? Still far easier and far more personally profitable to extort white guilt.
2. Culture says it’s not cool! Gangsta is cool! How does that dynamic get changed?
I have no solutions. First step is recognizing the obstacles.

First you gotta stay alive to study. They’re spending too much time killing each other. The Great Society set them way back-didn’t help. Take it away and then see what happens. Just look at the store riots when the EBT software goes down. Give them an education voucher and then watch how many corrupt schools pop up.
well, WE can’t make-em do homework...
Yup.
Most don’t even try to use their full potential, whatever that is for them.
We whites can’t do it for them. Yet if we support and encourage their efforts we are branded as patronizing. No win.
Black moms dont want dads around. They too like sleeping around, and the kids are their 18-year guaranteed paychecks for sleeping around.
The guys don’t want to hang around because modern black women are typically obese and insufferable. Every racial demo of men find them the least desirable.
Wheres your dad, kid? Know what I’m saying?
Blacks won’t either. That’s “acting white”.
All good points.
The only persons who can get this done are the kids who must take responsibility. Like you, I don't see this getting done either, except for those few who take it on themselves.
But you never know.
