Keep in mind that the Speaker of the House is elected by ALL House members -- not just the majority party.
So if the GOP margin is very narrow and a couple of Republicans refuse to vote for McCarthy, then Nancy Pelosi remains as the Speaker even though she's in the minority party.
That happened in CA in the 90s, when Republicans had a majority.

That is not correct. You need 218 votes to become speaker. Pelosi will not get 218 votes. She would need 100% of Ds and a few Rs to vote for her.
What could happen is the Ds could whip all of the Ds to vote for Liz Cheney or another never Trumper and a few of the Rs might also vote for them.
