The Boeing 737 and 777 came within 1,000 feet of a collision on the ground

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating an incident at John F. Kennedy International Airport that happened Friday night when a Boeing 777 taxied in front of a departing Boeing 737-900.

The 737 was operated by Delta Air Lines, the 777 by American Airlines.

According to the FAA, air traffic controllers “noticed another aircraft crossing the runway in front of the departing jetliner” and canceled the aircraft’s takeoff clearance.

The statement continues, “Delta Air Lines Flight 1943 stopped its takeoff roll approximately 1,000 feet before reaching the point where American Airlines Flight 106, a Boeing 777, had crossed from an adjacent taxiway.”

Thank Gawd there was no collision.

Not a good week for the FAA.

It would have been a broadside into the 777’s right side.

Don’t forget that the FAA went full DEI on hiring a couple years ago, this is just the fruits of their experiment. There will be More.

Just looking at a slowed down monitor-image of that incident kind of takes your breath away. You know how huge those planes are. To be thatclose to smacking into one, had to be dreadful.

Somebody’s going to miss their next scheduled promotion.
It will be on their Permanent Record!

That could be an interesting point if it isn’t based entirely on speculation.

Good time to review "near miss" and "near hit."

Right. Because there were no airline disasters when pilots and air traffic controllers were all white.

Do some Freepers even know how retarded they sound?

When you have to slam on the brakes at 115 mph with tiny little wheels in a load 100ft long tube, yeah it is.

Review of the tower instructions will tell whether American was told to hold short of the runway while Delta was taking off.

Or, worse, if Delta took off without clearance .

https://vdare.com/posts/faa-lowers-standards-for-air-traffic-controllers-because-diversity

Then, during the Obama administration, activist bureaucrats decided that the pool of air traffic controllers wasn’t diverse enough. They never explained why diversity ought to matter in air traffic control or why it was more important than traditional goals like competence and public safety.

The FAA, without a vote, just scrapped the old hiring system and replaced it with a diversity-friendly version. Most people have no idea this happened.

FWIW if you are interested (other thread linked below with video about incident), it appears that the pilot of the plane taxiing was at fault and the ATC caught it before it ended tragically.

Just saying. I can’t tell what “race” the ATC was and it does not matter one bit to me. He did good. Pilot of taxiing aircraft did bad. Pilot of the aircraft taking off appears to have reacted quickly to the CLEAR instructions of the ATC.

Not good, but the ATC deserves credit because that job is a stressfest and there is a lot to keep up with. Their system is best described as an antiquated mess (believe Trump said something similar).

Plane I was on had to do a go-around while trying to land at London-Gatwick because another plane was on the runway.

Also, approaching Atlanta one rainy night, the pilot put the throttle full on and climbed like taking off. I looked down and saw another plane go directly under us, perhaps 100 feet below. Scary.

/\

controllers , of all colors, used to be hired on

Competancy

Now hired by quota.

I would call you a child, but you’re an adult ( with less than a child’s mind .. aka real retardation )

Such a tool.

Most likely cause discussed on this thread and you can watch the ATC Live video that shows positions of the planes. Barring something we don’t know about, the taxiing aircraft appears to have taken instruction for a different aircraft number and/or missed their turn and the sign that said runway.

Flying out of SFO was in DC10 taking off to the north circa 89 We were getting up to speed when we went into full stop mode. The air brakes were up reverse thrust full braking with the plane hopping. While still rolling we pulled into one of the turnoffs. Looking to my right I saw a plane on the intersecting runway take off to the east. The copilot announced in a calm tone we would have to return to the hanger area for a brake check and refuel so our flight would be delayed two or so hours. Meanwhile on his open mike could hear what the pilot said to tower: what the f/?k are you trying to do kill us? He was really wound up. Apparently both had gotten or thought they had gotten take off clearance. Scariest take off I ever had and I’ve flown millions.
