Years and years ago, way before the Interwebz, there was a film I saw on how to make a silencer with a lawnmower muffler. Wasn’t legal, wasn’t 100% effective, but it was okay for plunking..... Haven’t seen it in years.......................

Many states have laws against suppressors, but the Federal law one would be breaking would be failure to register the lawnmower muffler and pay the required $200 tax. The law was passed in the days when the quaint idea prevailed that Congress could not ban things outright, but could tax them. The tax was so high (over $4000 in today’s money) thus effectively banning suppressors. Naturally the punishment for failing to pay the tax was, and still is, quite harsh.
