The iconic "Day-O" singer died at his home in New York City, according to longtime spokesperson Ken Sunshine.

Harry Belafonte, the effortlessly graceful singer credited with popularizing calypso in the U.S. in the 1950s who then marched at the forefront of the country’s civil rights struggle for half a century, died Tuesday, according to his spokesman.

He was 96.

Belafonte died of congestive heart failure in New York City, longtime spokesperson Ken Sunshine confirmed to NBC News.

Belafonte’s legacy as an arresting, charismatic singer and actor, which was sealed with the release of the landmark album “Calypso” in 1956, spanned more than six decades.

As recently as 2018 he made a bone-chilling appearance in the movie “BlacKkKlansman,” portraying an older civil rights leader who recounts the judicial railroading and brutal lynching of Jesse Washington, a Black teenage farmhand, in Waco, Texas, in 1916.

Cowardly. The best I can say. Think Colin Powell. You don’t say things you wouldn’t say to their face.

The 60’s. He was brave like all civil rights warriors. When he got old and nothing to lose he got like Carter and Julian Bone-more true colorist.

I would like to remember him as a delightful singer…..
…..but no
He was aggressively against conservative thought…….I remember him as angry and divisive

Based on his age, I looked it up. Yep, Belafonte was a WW II veteran.
He dropped out of high school, and enlisted in the Navy.

RIP

My mother was a big fan. Very talented guy. But kind of an angry jerk in my opinion.

My mother adored him. He had a live album at Carnegie Hall I think in the 60s... still a good listen... his voice was very special... a gift. He did seem to grow angry with age.

Was he one of the guys who used to appear on PBS pushing Leftist stuff? I can’t remember which singer it was. Been 20 plus years ago, though.

Condolences to his family, though

Cowardly? I would sing the Banana Boad Song to his face! Iconic song. Use it all the time to introduce students to Calypso music, along with The Sloop John B and Jamaican Farewell.
Yes, Belafonte was a rabid lib, but you can’t listen to music if you only patronize not libs. Same with movies.
Methinks you trigger to easily there, Karen.

He hated the USA even though it made him a millionaire.

He was the type that while working in a restaurant, would spit on white peoples food.
