The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine published operational information regarding the Russian invasion as of 6:00 p.m. on May 4, 2023.

In the evening summation, it is noted: “The Russian Federation continues to wage a war of aggression. Despite significant losses, it does not give up its plans to occupy our territory. The enemy continues to disregard the laws and customs of war, and uses terror tactics, strikes, and attacks on both military personnel and on civilian objects.
This day, at night, the Russian Federation made another massive attack on the territory of Ukraine, using Iranian attack UAVs “Shahed-136/131”, 18 out of 24 were destroyed by our defenders.
Today, the enemy launched 6 missile strikes on the cities of Kramatorsk and Zaporizhzhia, carried out 66 airstrikes, and launched 33 attacks from rocket salvo systems on the positions of our troops and populated areas. Unfortunately, there are deaths and injuries among the civilian population, private residential buildings, educational institutions, and other civilian infrastructure have been destroyed and damaged.
The probability of launching missile and air strikes on the entire territory of Ukraine remains high.
The enemy continues to focus its main efforts on conducting offensive actions in the Lyman, Bakhmut, and Mariinka directions - about 50 enemy attacks were repulsed. The fiercest battles continue for Bakhmut and Mariinka.
No signs of the formation of enemy offensive groups were detected in the Volyn and Polissia directions.
In the Siversk and Slobozhansky directions, the enemy carried out artillery and mortar attacks on the settlements of Yeline, Mykolaivka, Ivanivka, Buchki, Hremiach of the Chernihiv region; Uralove, Porokhon, Studenok, Shalyhine, Rivne and Boiaro-Lezhachi, Stukalyvka, Bilopillia, Oleksiivka, Yunakivka and Slavhorod of the Sumy Region, as well as Hlyboke, Vesele, Vovchanski Khutory, Karaichne, Bochkove and Budarky in the Kharkiv Region. Private houses were destroyed and damaged. There are wounded among the civilian population.
The enemy did not conduct offensive operations in the Kupyansk direction. The settlements of Kamianka, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Lyman Pershy, Kislivka, Krokhmalne, and Berestove of the Kharkiv region were subjected to artillery and mortar attacks.

In the Lyman direction, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of the southwestern outskirts of Spirne. Makiivka, Andriivka, Hrekivka, Dibrova, Bilohorivka of the Luhansk region were hit by artillery fire; Torske, Verkhniokamianske, Spirne of the Donetsk region.
In the Bakhmut direction, fighting continues in the city of Bakhmut. In addition, during the day, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the direction of the settlements of Bohdanivka and Markove. Nikiforivka, Vasiukivka, Novomarkove, Markove, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Diliivka, Zalizne, and New York of the Donetsk region were affected by enemy shelling.
The enemy did not conduct offensive operations in the Avdiivka direction. Fired at Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Netailove, and Karlivka in the Donetsk region.
In the Mariinka direction, the enemy is trying to improve the tactical position. Numerous enemy attacks in the Mariinka area were repulsed. At the same time, Krasnohorivka, Pobieda, and Novomykhailivka of the Donetsk region came under enemy fire.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy shelled Vuhledar, Novoukrainka, Prechystivka, and Shakhtarsk in the Donetsk region.
The enemy continues to conduct defensive operations in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions. More than 50 settlements were shelled. Among them are Vremivka, Novosilka, and Novopil of the Donetsk region; Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanilivka, and Orihiv, Zaporizhzhia region; Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk region; Dudchany, Zmiivka, Ivanivka, Dniprovske, Kizomys of the Kherson region and the city of Kherson.

Russian occupying forces continue to suffer heavy losses on the battlefield, all medical facilities in the temporarily occupied territory are full of wounded occupiers. As a result, the enemy continues to equip civilian educational institutions for medical institutions. For example, in the village of Myrne, Zaporizhzhia region, the occupiers are converting the sports hall of the local school into a military hospital. At the same time, the Russian invaders force the teaching staff to continue the educational process with compulsory school attendance by children.
Aviation of the Defense Forces per day made 6 strikes on areas of concentration of enemy personnel.

On 4 May, malfunctions in the operation of the GPS (Global Positioning System) began in the Russian capital. The day before, the Russian Federation announced an “attack on the Kremlin” with drones, and Victory Day on 9 May is ahead.

DETAILS: Residents of Moscow experienced GPS malfunctions on Thursday, as Telegram channels Baza and Ateo Breaking reported.
Information about problems with GPS was confirmed to RBC journalists by the Yandex search service.
A company representative said that the incorrect display of users’ geolocation may be due to malfunctions in the satellite system, which affects all services, from navigators to fitness bracelets.
At the same time, the source of the agency noted that internet services are not involved in GPS failures since applications receive false information from devices (smartphones and tablets). The company did not specify why the devices transmit incorrect information.
Baza, citing sources in law enforcement agencies, reported that navigation within the Bulvarny and Sadovy Rings in Moscow has been jammed.
“During the preparation for the Victory Day Parade, the GPS location change will be activated. Navigators may malfunction – that is, you can stand on Tverskaya Street, and your location on maps will be in the Vnukovo district,” Baza writes.
Problems with GPS operation were also confirmed to The Daily Storm by GLONASS [Russian satellite navigation system]. They reported that the malfunctions began on 4 May “around 06:00”. They do not specify what they were caused by.
Telegram channel Ateo Breaking writes that problems with determining coordinates are observed throughout Moscow.
BACKGROUND:
- The Russian President’s administration said that on the night of 3 May, two unmanned aerial vehicles allegedly attacked the Kremlin residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Officially, the Russian authorities reported the incident only after noon on Wednesday. The Kremlin said that Kyiv and Washington are behind the “assassination attempt” on Putin’s life.
- Ukrainian officials deny involvement in the drone attack. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine “does not attack either Putin or Moscow”.
- John Kirby, US National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator, called the Russian accusations “ridiculous”. “The United States did not take any part in this. [Kremlin spokesman Dmitry] Peskov is just lying,” Kirby said.

Russian forces fighting in Ukraine have lost 16 artillery systems in the past 24 hours, Kyiv said Thursday. A further three MLRS, or multiple launch rocket systems, were taken out over the previous day, the General Staff of the Armed Forces added.
Writing on Facebook, the General Staff said in its daily update that Russia has lost a total of 2,962 artillery systems since the start of full-scale war in February 2022.
On Wednesday, the Russian defense ministry said Ukraine had lost several howitzers, as well as updating the Kremlin count of reported Ukrainian losses to 4,717 field artillery cannons and mortars since February 24, 2022. On Tuesday,
Russian defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, said that in the past month Russia had destroyed 225 field artillery pieces and mortars used by Ukraine’s armed forces.
Artillery supplies and associated ammunition are key to both sides waging mechanized war, which is playing out across Ukraine’s battlefields.
“The war in Ukraine has become an artillery war,” the Center for Strategic and International Studies said in January.
On Wednesday, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War think tank said Russian artillery fire had continued in several regions of Ukraine, including the southern Kherson region and contested Luhansk Oblast.

The command has decided to form two additional mechanized brigades and one elite unit.
On the eve of Ukrainian long awaited counter-offensive to liberate its land, we learned that Ukrainian Army is forming two new mechanized units, 42nd Mechanized Brigade and 43rd Mechanized Brigade. Furthermore, Air Assault Forces, the elite of Ukrainian Army, are also being expanded by a new regiment.
42nd Mechanized Brigade is a new mechanized brigade of Ukrainian Ground Forces, currently at the stage of formation. The brigade was likely formed on the basis of a separate rifle battalion.
43rd Mechanized Brigade is another fresh Ukrainian mechanized brigade. The unit is currently being formed, possibly on the basis of a separate rifle battalion.
78th Regiment Herts is an elite unit, originally formed on February 24, 2022, as a separate special purpose company of Ukrainian National Guard, and later reassigned to Main Intelligence Directorate and expanded to a consolidated detachment. In April, it was decided to expand the unit into a regiment under the command of Ukrainian Air Assault Forces.
