Considering some of the comments in this thread and other threads on FR, Politico reporters seem like they’ve penetrated FR to make comments.

Um, no. That phrase has a totally different meaning. In this context, it would mean someone who is also running but has much less of a chance of winning.
She is portrayed as being an overly supportive wife. I don't think they prove the "overly" part.
